I think as nursing students, we all thought that nurses all had their stuff together. They all seemed to have a handle on their tasks, they were on point with their time management, and always seemed to be confident in all their skills. I'm sure some nurses do have all those things mastered but let me tell you that isn't the majority. That is the hidden secret of nursing. No one tells you but most people don't have it together they just manage to get as much done throughout the day as possible and are relieved when they do anything too stupid. I don't know why we put on this façade. But after my first week of nursing I quickly learned that actually no one really has it that together. Yes you have days where you are all caught up on meds and charting and actually have 10 minutes to look at progress notes on your patients. But then you have other days where you only get 1 break but you are so busy all day you haven't even had a chance to look up patient labs. And of course the dreaded no lunch days which luckily I have not had to experience yet. (I believe team nursing is the sole reason that day hasn't happened yet for me.)
